Highways UK is an annual event bringing together people from all aspects of the Highways Industry and has established itself as one of the most exciting and most anticipated events in the industry calendar. The best thing, it is free, making it accessible and a great opportunity to those interested in a career in highways to network with successful people in the industry.

We got to meet many inspiring, passionate people and it was so interesting to learn more about the Highways sector. It is a sector that is often overlooked, and we are currently seeing a severe skills shortage amongst the younger generations. However, after attending the event, we have learnt how important (and exciting) a career in highways can be. Roads keep us all connected and ensure our country is operating in a safe, productive way. This was highlighted by the panel, hosted by the founding member of the Highways Sector Council, Anna Delvecchio. Alongside her guest speakers, they spoke about why young people are attracted to other sectors such as aviation, media, and manufacturing. They commented on how important it is to change the image of highways and why we should be highlighting the greatness of a career in this sector in the school system. Also on the panel was an apprentice for Mace. As a young person entering the industry, it was fascinating to hear his experiences so far and how he believes young people just don’t know enough about highways. There is a job for everyone in this industry, and that is a fact that needs to be highlighted.

It was also great to see the creativity that went into the stands there. One of our particular favourites was the JCB stand, where they had a digger in which they allowed guests to sit in and take photos. It was especially great to see a school trip become so engaged with this stand, and I imagine it has inspired a few of them to consider a career they may not have considered.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, and we look forward to attending again next year.
